EMDR Therapy for First-Generation Latinas in California

You may understand why you react the way you do and still feel your body take over. A familiar tone, conflict with family, a memory, or the pressure to keep everyone happy can bring back anxiety, shutdown, anger, guilt, or the urge to over-function.

EMDR therapy offers a structured way to work with experiences that continue to shape the present. At Café de Olla Therapy, EMDR is provided virtually to adults located throughout California, with attention to culture, family roles, migration stories, and the realities of being first-generation.

When the past keeps showing up in the present

Trauma is not limited to one dramatic event. It can also develop through repeated experiences: feeling responsible for adults too early, growing up around instability, learning to stay quiet to preserve connection, experiencing racism or discrimination, or carrying expectations that left little room for your own needs.

You might notice overthinking, emotional numbness, people-pleasing, irritability, body tension, difficulty trusting yourself, or strong reactions that seem bigger than the present moment. These responses often began as ways to adapt and survive.

What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly called EMDR, is a psychotherapy approach used to help people process distressing experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or alternating taps—while you work with memories, beliefs, emotions, and body sensations in a structured way.

You remain awake and in control. You do not have to share every detail of an experience, and the work is paced according to your readiness, stability, and goals.

A culturally responsive approach to EMDR

For first-generation Latinas, healing may involve more than changing a thought. We may explore messages about sacrifice, loyalty, respeto, gender roles, achievement, immigration, or being la que puede con todo. The goal is not to reject your culture or family. It is to understand what belongs to you, what protected you, and what you want to carry forward differently.

What we may work on

Virtual EMDR throughout California

Sessions are held securely online for clients located in California. Before reprocessing begins, we discuss privacy, grounding resources, your support system, and whether virtual EMDR is clinically appropriate for you. EMDR is one option; therapy can also integrate CBT, DBT skills, mindfulness, and relational work based on your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to relive everything?

EMDR does not require you to describe every detail aloud. You will notice parts of the experience while staying connected to the present, and we work at a pace that supports safety.

How quickly does EMDR work?

There is no universal timeline. The length of treatment depends on your history, current stressors, goals, and the number and complexity of experiences being addressed.

How much are sessions?

Sessions are 50–60 minutes and cost $200. Credit, debit, HSA, and FSA payments are accepted. Superbills are available for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
