Therapy for Resentment After Motherhood
You love your family, and you are tired of being the person who notices, plans, remembers, delegates, and follows up. The anger may surface over dishes, bedtime, an appointment, or a partner waiting to be told what needs to happen—but the feeling is usually connected to a larger pattern.
Café de Olla Therapy offers virtual therapy throughout California for first-generation Latina moms navigating resentment, unequal responsibility, relationship stress, anxiety, guilt, and the loss of space for themselves after motherhood.
Resentment is information
Resentment can signal that your limits, labor, needs, or expectations require attention. It does not automatically mean your relationship is doomed or that you are ungrateful. It may mean the current arrangement is asking too much from you.
You might notice snapping over small requests, feeling angry when your partner rests, keeping mental lists of everything you do, or becoming emotionally distant because explaining the problem feels like one more task.
The pressure carried by first-generation Latina moms
Motherhood may sit on top of older roles: the capable daughter, family translator, peacemaker, helper, or person who succeeded so the sacrifice would be worth it. You may feel responsible for giving your children everything you did not have while also staying connected to parents, culture, work, and partnership.
Therapy can hold both truths: your love for your family and the cost of carrying more than one person can sustainably own.
From occasional help to shared ownership
Resentment rarely changes through a perfect communication script alone. We can look at the full pattern: who notices a need, decides what should happen, plans it, completes it, and follows up. Therapy can help you clarify what you want transferred, shared, simplified, or stopped.
We may also work on tolerating different methods without accepting unfinished responsibility, responding to defensiveness, and recognizing when repeated promises are not creating meaningful change.
Reconnecting with yourself after motherhood
Our work can include more than household logistics. You may want to reconnect with identity, rest, pleasure, career, friendship, sexuality, or parts of yourself that became harder to access. Approaches can include relational therapy, CBT, DBT skills, mindfulness, and EMDR when present reactions connect to earlier experiences.

Frequently asked questions
Is this couples therapy?
No. Café de Olla Therapy provides individual therapy. We can work on your emotions, choices, communication, boundaries, and relationship patterns without treating the couple as the client.
What if I feel guilty talking about my partner or family?
Therapy offers a confidential space to understand your experience with nuance. Naming resentment does not erase love, loyalty, or appreciation.
What are the fee and payment options?
Virtual sessions are 50–60 minutes and cost $200. Credit, debit, HSA, and FSA payments are accepted. Superbills are available for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
